Food × Origin · SOURCE NOTE

Barako is a story. Buyers still need a specification.

Kapeng Barako is a powerful Philippine name. But when a café, food company, or overseas buyer evaluates coffee, the name must be followed by precise information.

4 MIN READ

Start with species

Ask whether the coffee is 100% Liberica or a blend. The Philippine coffee industry recognises Liberica and Excelsa as distinct commercial species, so the answer should not be assumed from the word Barako alone.

Then locate the lot

Record the farm, cooperative, community, municipality, and province where possible. A province-level story is useful; a traceable lot is more useful.

Describe what is being offered

Green beans, roasted whole beans, and ground coffee are different products. Record roast level, grind, pack size, crop or roast date, available quantity, and lead time.

Ask for evidence before making claims

Samples, labels, registrations, farm photographs, invoices, and processing records help turn a sales description into information a prospective partner can evaluate.
